John William Norie (3 July 1772 - 24 December 1843) was an early 19th Century marine instrument maker and author. He founded J.W Norie & Company in 1813 after he took over the Naval Warehouse in Leadenhall Street, London, from William Heather, upon Heather's retirement; the Naval Warehouse produced navigational instruments, charts and books on navigation.
The most famous of Norie's publications was the Complete Set of Nautical Tables and Epitome of Practical Navigation, published in 1803. After Norie's death in 1843, the company became Norie and Wilson. So the octant dates from the period 1813 to 1843, which means it's roughly 200 years old. Instruments of this age are sometimes referred to as a quadrant. It has an ebony frame, ivory vernier scales, an ivory name plate, a brass index arm and various shades for the horizon and main mirrors, all mounted in brass. Rather than use a sighting telescope, this instrument has a sighting pinnular. |
