This classic 8-spoke, 36" (91.4 cm) diameter, ship's wheel was made by MacTaggart, Scott & Co. Ltd., Edinburgh who have been in business since 1898.
The wood is English oak and it has a brass hub and brass rim inserts on both sides. The previously lacquered brass hub is engraved with the maker's name.
The spoke with the brass cap — the king spoke — is the one that should point straight upward when the rudder is dead straight to the hull. The tip could be felt by a helmsman steering in the dark and was used to determine the position of the rudder.
The shaft hole is tapered, with a diameter going from 37 mm at the rear, to 26 mm at the front. The key-way is 10.5 mm wide.
The brass hub and rims can be polished and lacquered for additional cost (POA). |
