Fenders are like cushions, or buffers, that (typically) hang over the side of smaller boats to protect the side of the boat, and any neighbouring boats that are moored in a marina, or at a wharf.

Vintage fenders are usually made from rope alone, but some have an air filled bladder that's covered in a dense mesh of knotted rope-work.
